Confirmed Speakers
Adrienne Fairhall
Professor, Department of Physiology and Biophysics, University of Washington
More information
Adjunct Professor at the Department of Physics, University of Washington (UW); Adjunct Professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics (UW);
Co-Director, UW Computational Neuroscience Center. Head of Fairhall Lab, which uses mathematical and statistical methods to study the relationship between neuronal circuitry and functional algorithms of computation. Through collaborations with experimental labs, Fairhall develops analysis and modeling to understand how: single neurons transform their inputs; what rules govern adaptation in different sensory modalities; how the properties of single neurons contribute to their role in network dynamics; how algorithms of learning, memory and motor control are instantiated in the dynamics of neural circuits in birdsong, invertebrate models and primates.

More information
Near-infrared light can penetrate into deep tissue and provide information about blood oxygenation and blood flow. Although near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) techniques have been widely employed in neuroscience and cancer biology, recent studies on muscle support evidence that NIRS is also useful to understand tissue microcirculation and resaturation after muscle occlusion. In this talk we will present novel NIRS studies to better understand muscle physiology, and discuss how this work can be useful to determine patient outcome after COVID-19 diagnosis. In particular, we will present current experimental protocols to address both mild and severe cases following COVID-19, which also has future and potential applications to brain function, diabetes and patients in the ICU.
